Which bold style should I use?

Where Unicode bold works

Unicode includes complete bold alphabets in serif and sans-serif designs, created for mathematical notation. These are Unicode characters, not a font file, so they keep their bold look in any app that can display them, including LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, X and YouTube comments. They display on current Android, iPhone, Windows and Mac devices.

Use them sparingly. A bold headline or name catches the eye, but a long bold paragraph is tiring to read, is harder to find with search, and can be read awkwardly by assistive technology. In documents and email, use the editor’s own bold formatting instead.

Frequently asked questions

Why not just use the bold button?

Use it when you have one. Word processors, email and many chat apps have real bold formatting, which is better for accessibility and search. Unicode bold is for places that have none, such as most social bios, LinkedIn posts and comment boxes.

Can I make numbers bold?

Yes, in Bold Serif and Bold Sans, which both include bold digits 0 to 9. Bold Italic and Bold Fraktur have no bold numbers, so digits stay normal in those styles.

Do bold letters work with accents?

The base letter becomes bold and the original accent is placed on top of it, so é and ñ still display. Some fonts position the accent slightly off, so check the result before posting.

Is bold Unicode text accessible?

Not fully. Screen readers may read each letter as a mathematical symbol or skip it, and in-app search may not find bold words. Bold one short line, not a whole paragraph.

How do I make text bold in WhatsApp or Discord?

Both have their own formatting. In WhatsApp, put asterisks around the words, like *this*. In Discord, use two asterisks on each side, like **this**. That keeps the text normal and searchable.
