How to use it

  1. Type the words you want to slant, such as a title, a quote or a single word you want to stress.
  2. Choose Italic Serif for a bookish look or Italic Sans for a modern one. Both appear at the top of the list.
  3. If the slant looks too light on a phone, try Bold Italic instead.
  4. Press Copy and paste the result. Write any numbers in plain digits, since italic has none.

Where to use it

Italic, bold italic or script?

These three are often confused, and each solves a different problem:

The serif and sans-serif versions behave the same; choose by look. Italic Serif feels literary and formal, Italic Sans feels clean and modern.

Where italic Unicode breaks

Italic is the most delicate of the Unicode styles, so check three things before you post:

  1. No digits. There are no italic numbers in Unicode, so “2024” stays upright in the middle of slanted text.
  2. The ℎ in Italic Serif. The small h comes from an older symbol block and can look out of place next to the other letters. If it bothers you, switch to Italic Sans or Bold Italic Serif, which have their own h.
  3. Thin strokes. Light italic letters can be hard to read at small sizes or on low-contrast backgrounds. Bold Italic is the fix.

Accented letters keep their accents, placed on top of the italic base letter. As with every Unicode style, these are characters, not a font file: they may not be found by in-app search and screen readers may not read them as words. Keep italics to a few words at a time.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as italic formatting in a word processor?

No. A word processor slants normal letters with formatting. This tool replaces each letter with a separate italic Unicode character, so the slant travels with the text into apps that have no formatting at all.

Why does the italic h look different?

The italic small h was already in Unicode as the Planck constant symbol ℎ, so the mathematical italic alphabet has a gap where h would be and uses ℎ instead. On some devices ℎ comes from another font and looks slightly heavier or taller. Italic Sans does not have this gap.

Why do my numbers stay upright?

Unicode has no italic or bold italic digits in any style. Numbers stay in their normal form and the tool reports them as kept as-is. If upright numbers look odd, write them as words.

What is the difference between italic and cursive?

Italic letters are slanted versions of normal letters and stay easy to read. Cursive or script letters imitate handwriting with loops and flourishes. Use italic for subtle emphasis and cursive for decoration.

How do I write italics in WhatsApp, Discord or Word?

Use their own formatting. In WhatsApp, put underscores around the words, like _this_. In Discord, use single asterisks or underscores. In Word or Google Docs, use the italic button. The text then stays searchable and spell-checked.
